Our mission is to understand and improve the conditions of citizens in developing countries and to instill a sense of social responsibility and activism among young adults in North America.
As an organization, our goal is to develop programs and initiatives that will serve this mission.
Traditionally, this has been the focal point of our activities. The Summer Volunteer Program (SVP) began in 1999 as an activity operated by IMRC (Indian Muslim Relief and Charities) with the intention of providing youth an opportunity to see and learn about the challenges of working in developing countries. In 2010, SVP became its own self-sustaining and operating organization and after obtaining 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the State of California, the organization was soon named United for Service.
Our strategy for growth is two-fold:
- Global expansion
In the long-term, we intend to continue expanding our global volunteering program in order to provide potential volunteers with the opportunity to carry out a variety of different types of work in a number of different countries. With the India program established for a number of years, our inaugural volunteer trip to Morocco was launched in June 2011. Expanding our global volunteering program gives us the opportunity to partner with other not-for-profit organizations who are already carrying out tremendous work all over the world. Rather than “re-create the wheel”, we see the opportunity and value in working together to help our partners achieve their goals while providing development opportunities for our members. - Strengthening our domestic communities
We want young adults in North America to be active participants in helping those in need in their communities and around the world. We believe it is integral for today’s youth to step up and get involved in helping solve the problems that surround us. We hope to become a resource for information, an outlet for discussion, and a forum where Muslim young adults from across North America can exchange ideas and help one another become more valuable contributors to society.
